Is AI Investment Good Right Now? What Australian Investors Need to Know in 2026

Just a few weeks ago, Nvidia shares climbed another 19%  year to date, piling onto the astronomical gains it already made over the previous three years. The valuation is so high that investors expect flawless, massive growth. And if that growth slows even a fraction, the stock price could plummet.

Is AI investment still good right now?

AI investment still has a credible long-term case, but many analysts fear that stock prices have skyrocketed on pure hype.

The bottom line is that there's still room to profit, but only if you buy companies earning from the technology rather than companies just riding the hype. Here's how to tell the difference:

·       Infrastructure sellers (real revenue): These are the businesses selling the actual hardware (chips, data centres, and cloud capacity) that AI systems require to function. Their growth is backed by massive and verified spending from tech giants.

·       Hype riders (marketing only): These are businesses changing their corporate language to mention "AI" simply to lift their share prices without showing any real increase in profit.

Before buying, be sure to check:

·       Does the valuation leave room for a weaker quarter?

·       Do you already own similar exposure through your super or global share fund?

·       If you are a corporate investor, always ask: Does the company’s energy use fit your ESG investment standards?

Watch out for AI investment scams

ASIC warned in April 2026 that scammers now use AI to create more convincing fake investment ads and false endorsements. That does not mean listed AI companies are scams. It means investors should be wary of any AI pitch promising fast or easy returns.
